Connector

Use Scatter with Claude.

Add Scatter once and the assistant can look up a patent family, read the examination reports Scatter has extracted, and list the documents cited against each application. The assistant reads the extracted data; the interpretation stays with you.

What the assistant can read

Scatter is a patent family explorer for attorneys. Through the connector, an assistant can read:

  • Patent families and the status of each member, in the office's own wording.
  • Examination reports Scatter has extracted, with the objections raised round by round.
  • The documents cited against each application, and across a family.
  • A publication's legal history and bibliographic detail.
  • The validations of a granted European patent.
  • A publication's published claims.

What it does not do: it does not interpret the reports, advise, or decide anything. Scatter extracts the data; the attorney interprets it and decides. Verify anything you rely on against the office record.

The connector address

https://www.scatter-ip.com/mcp

The first time you use it, a Scatter sign-in window opens. Sign in, approve the connection once, and it carries on from there. No separate key is needed.

claude.ai and Claude Desktop

  1. Open Settings, then Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Scatter, paste the address above and add it.
  4. Connect when asked, and approve the Scatter sign-in.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner of the organisation can add the connector once under the organisation's connector settings, and each person then connects to it with their own Scatter sign-in.

Claude Code

Run this once:

claude mcp add --transport http scatter https://www.scatter-ip.com/mcp

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and choose Scatter to sign in.

Cursor and VS Code

Each button opens the app and offers to add Scatter. Confirm it there, then sign in to Scatter when the app asks. If a button does nothing, the app is not installed on this computer.

Then ask

Try “Summarise the prosecution of EP1000000” or “List the documents cited across the family of US17/106,694”. Where the assistant lists slash commands, Scatter adds two ready-made ones for these.

Scatter reads examination reports by itself for some offices only, and a family you ask about may need to be opened or fetched first. The assistant will say when nothing is stored yet.

Signing in

Without an account the connector reads what any visitor sees. When you sign in from your assistant, it acts as your Scatter account: it can read your private uploads, and it can ask Scatter to fetch a family's examination reports from the patent offices, within a daily allowance. Revoke a connection any time under Connected apps on your account page.

Frequently asked questions

What can an AI assistant read through Scatter?

Patent families and the status of each member, the examination reports Scatter has extracted with the objections raised, the documents cited against each application, a publication's legal history and bibliographic detail, the validations of a granted European patent, and a publication's published claims.

Does the assistant interpret the examination reports?

No. Scatter extracts structured data from the documents. The assistant reads that data and reports it, and the attorney interprets it and decides.

Is an account needed?

Without an account the connector reads what any visitor to Scatter sees. Signing in to Scatter from your assistant also lets it read your own private uploads and ask Scatter to fetch a family's examination reports from the patent offices, within a daily allowance.

How does sign-in work?

The first time you use the connector, a Scatter sign-in window opens. Sign in, approve the connection once, and the assistant carries on. No separate key is needed. You can revoke the connection on your Account page.

Which offices and applications are covered?

Family lookups work for any office the European Patent Office family service covers, including AU, EP and US. Examination reports are read automatically for a set of offices, and for others they come from reports uploaded on Scatter. The assistant says when nothing is stored yet.

Which apps does it work with?

Claude on the web and desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. Any other application that supports remote MCP connectors can use the same address.

Is this the same as the API?

They read the same information. The connector is for assistants and needs no key. The API is for people who write their own programs, and uses a personal key made on the Account page.

Writing your own code?

Personal API keys are for people who write their own programs against Scatter. Make one on your account page, and see the API documentation. Connecting an assistant does not need one.
